alien on the Edit Bar above the Stage to return to the alien Timeline. 7. Select frame 18 on the Left Blink layer, and press F7 to insert a blank keyframe. Do the same for the Right Blink layer. 8. Select the empty keyframe on frame 18 of the Left Blink layer, and choose Edit > Paste In Center. The left eye you copied appears on the Stage. 9. Use the Selection tool to move the copy of the eye so that it is directly above the eye that is part of the body graphic. You may need to use the arrow keys to nudge the eye into place. 10. Lock the Body, Right Arm, and Left Arm layers so that you don't accidentally select them. 11. Select the eye graphic that you just placed, and press F8 to convert it to a symbol. 12. Select Graphic for the type, and name it alien_eyeblink. Then, click OK. Using a Mask to Animate a Symbol You've used masks in previous lessons to slowly reveal parts of a layer. In this lesson, you'll use a mask to show and hide the underlying eye, creating a blinking effect. When the eye is blinking, the eyelid, which is the same color as the face, will show. When the eye is open, the full eye will show. Breaking Apart Symbols You just created a symbol, but now you need to break it apart so that you can work separately with the fill, pupil, and outline. 1. Double-click the alien_eyeblink instance on the Stage to edit the symbol. 2. Select the left eye on the Stage. 3. Choose Modify > Break Apart. The eye becomes editable pixels. 4. Click in a blank area of the Stage to deselect the eye. Preparing the Layers that will be Masked You'll create the eyelid, which will appear when the eye is blinking. 1. Select the pupil in the eye, and delete it. 2. Select the white fill in the eye, and delete it. In the Library panel preview, you should see only the outline of the eye. 3. Select the Paint Bucket tool ( ) in the Tools panel. 4. Click the Fill Color icon in the options area of the Tools panel, type #619AD2 for the color, and then press Enter or Return. You're applying a color to the eyelid that is the same color as the alien's head. 5. With the Paint Bucket tool, click anywhere inside the outline of the eye on the Stage. The outline is filled with the blue color. 6. With the Selection tool, select the fill.
